Gene McCarthy’s expansion includes brewery

blog by S.J. Velasquez  •

Old First Ward icon Gene McCarthy’s received the OK from the city Tuesday to expand the neighborhood pub and add on a brewery.

The neighborhood pub, located at 73 Hamburg St. in Buffalo, opened in 1963 and now secures itself as one of Buffalo’s premier craft beer destinations.

According to the pub’s official website:

“In the spring of 2013 we will install our own brewing system and begin offering our own house-made IPA, pale ale, porter, seasonals and other house-made craft brews.”

McCarthy’s, owned by a small group of beer and brewing buffs from the Buffalo area, recently underwent a modest makeover that includes a revamped pub menu with American and Irish-inspired offerings. The image above is a sketch of the planned expansion.

The pub caters to beer aficionados by offering special events, tastings and Better Beverage Society meetings.
