Get your grill on at Burgerfest 2013. The one day festival will take place from noon to 11:30 p.m. on Saturday (July 20).
Claiming to be the birthplace of the hamburger in 1885 for the Erie County Fair, event organizers say that the town held it’s first Burgerfest to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the grilled grub. Frank and Charles Menches are credited with the accidental dish.
Legend has it that the Menches brothers ran out of their usual pork sausage that hot, fateful day at the fair and turned to a local butcher to replenish their supplies. When no pork was available, a butcher suggested they use ground beef. The Menches brothers purchased the beef, but added secret ingredients, including coffee grounds to create a unique flavor and the hamburger was born. According to historical records, the burger got its name when a customer asked what this wonderful sandwich was called and one of the brothers looked up and, seeing the Hamburg Fairgrounds sign, said, “why it is the hamburger.”
Participating restaurants in the annual Burgerfest include August Bistro, Big Belly BBQ, Big Norm’s Dogs & More, Charlie’s Sugar Waffles, Danny’s South, Giacobbi’s Pizza & Pasta, Hamburg Republicans, Hotroxs Buffalo Bistro, Jack Devine’s Irish Pub, Jimmie’s Pizza, Jim’s Fries, Main Street Ice Cream, Mason’s Grille 52, Melanie’s Eats & Sweets, Nick Charlap’s Ice Cream, Pat Marsillo Concessions, Roaming Buffalo, Skeet’s Sliders, Sweet Temptations, Tropical Ice, Village Sweet Shoppe and more.
