Gettin’ fussy with Feed Your Soul

blog by Ben Tsujimoto • February 07, 2012 @ 4:47pm
Generosity and collective support are two very “Buffalo” qualities, and Wednesday’s Feed Your Soul event, “A Big FUSS,” does well to incorporate both characteristics while also luring patrons in for delicious snacks.
The annual event runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Artisan Kitchens and Baths, 200 Amherst St., and will feature appearances from recognizable local chefs who support a good cause: helping out a local farm that’s struggling to make ends meet. Tickets run for $30, and proceeds benefit the needy farm.
Because Feed Your Soul owner Christa Glennie Seychew is so well connected with the Buffalo food scene—from local restaurants to the farmers that support them—she’s very aware when unavoidable problems arise.
“With the danger and risk inherent in farming, we will certainly know someone every year who is either toeing the line of desperation, can grow their business [or] increase the supply of what local restaurants need and want by installing a greenhouse or adding a piece of farm equipment,” Seychew said in an email explaining the purpose of the event.
The chefs scheduled to cook, all of whom rely on locally-sourced ingredients at their restaurants, are essentially a “Who’s Who” of the Buffalo culinary scene:
—Chef/Owner Steven Gedra of Bistro Europa in Buffalo
—Chef/Owner Adam Goetz of Sample in Buffalo
—Chef/Owner Jim Guarino of Shango Bistro in Buffalo
—Chef/Owners Chris and Pete from Lloyd Taco Truck
—Executive Chef Kate Elliott of Merge
—Executive Chef Ross Warhol of Chautauqua’s Athenaeum Hotel
—Sous Chef Bruce Wieszala of Carmelo’s in Lewiston
Wednesday, these chefs will cook using donations from local farms such as Promised Land CSA/Oles Family Farm, Unfinished Farm, Painted Meadows and T-Meadow Farm. It’s very encouraging to see other local farms supporting another that’s fallen upon hard times. And do not fret, there will be a cash bar available at “A Big FUSS.”
There are several desirable auction items as well:
—2x Tickets to Nickel City Chef 20: J.J. Richert of Torches vs. Chris Dorsaneo of Lloyd Taco
—Cheese Basket from Buffalo Cheese Traders/Vermont Butter and Cheese
—Salami Basket from COPPA
—An 11x14 watercolor of The French Laundry by Vicki Warhol
—A private lesson in Parisian macaron making from macaron master Sarah Wally
—Sunday Tea for Two on the wrap-around porch at The Athenaeum Hotel
—Dinner package from Sea Bar
—A Deluxe entertainment package from WELCOME magazine
—$125 Heritage Pork Family Package from T-Meadow Farm
—2x tickets to Buffalo Museum of Science events “Love is a Crime” and “Get a Clue”
—$50 in gift certificates from Fables
Feed Your Soul also presents the annual series of “Iron Chef”-style cooking contests called Nickel City Chef. For more information, go here. Buying local is a good thing!
