Girl Scout Cookie season is upon us

Remember the old days when Girl Scouts would walk up to your door with an order form and list of cookie descriptions? Well, that was simply dangerous and irresponsible parenting.
Now, you have to dig a little to find a Girl Scout to sell you boxes of the Thin Mints. Don’t worry—there’s an app for that. No, seriously. Not only can you use the Girl Scout Cookies website to get in touch with a cookie seller, you can actually download a free application on your iPhone that will produce a list of nearby Girl Scout Cookie vendors.
The official sale of Girl Scout Cookies in Western New York began Saturday and will last just about two months, so time’s limited. Boxes of cookies are $3.50, and approximately $0.55 per box goes to the troupe, depending on the total number of boxes sold.
Now, get ready to be totally confused when you place your order this year. The Girl Scouts sneakily changed the names of many popular cookie varieties without really taking the time to explain that to devoted customers who will be asking for Samoas and Tag-A-Longs. Luckily, I have younger female cousins who are in the know. My cousin Clare explained in an email:
Thanks-a-Lot: shortbread cookies dipped in fudge.
Shout Outs!: caramelized cookies.
Lemonades: shortbread cookies with lemon icing.
Shortbread: the traditional shortbread cookies.
Thin Mints: chocolate wafers dipped in chocolate with a burst of peppermint.
Peanut Butter Patties: vanilla cookies with a coat of peanut butter and then a layer of chocolate.
Caramel deLites: vanilla cookies dipped in caramel and then topped with coconut.
Peanut Butter Sandwiches: oatmeal cookies with peanut butter in the middle.

Caramel “deLites?” You’re killing me, Girl Scouts of America. At least they didn’t discontinue the thin mints or anything that drastic. I’ve never met a thin mint I didn’t like.
I may be dating myself here, but i’m about 99% sure that most of these names are the original names for these cookies (back when I was selling them as a kid) Somewhere in the early 90s they changed the names to what we know and love today, but I definitely remember selling Carmel Delights and Peanut Butter Patties!
Actually, they didn’t change the cookie names, per se. It depends on which “licensed baker” the local Girl Scouts Council chooses. There are two: Little Brownie Bakers or ABC Bakers. Each of the bakers owns its cookie names, except Thin Mint, which is in the common domain.
I am not ashamed to know this. I moved a lot as a child and it drove me crazy switching between “caramel delight” and “samoa,” so I had to do some research to figure out why.
