Gordon Ramsay craves Buffalo’s sausage

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •

Hell’s Kitchen star Gordon Ramsay, who holds the third-most Michelin stars all-time, has purchased Cumberland sausage from Buffalo’s own English Pork Pie Company, according to the business’ Facebook page and confirmed by owners Damian and Vicky Parker.

“A company from California called and asked for Cumberland sausages to be delivered by the next day,” Vicky Parker said in a phone call early this afternoon. “I’m glad I asked who it was for, because the response was ‘Gordon Ramsay.’”

Known for his temper and perhaps unrealistically high expectations, Scotland-born Ramsay may be one of the harshest food critics in the world. He owns restaurants all over the globe, including eateries in New York City and Los Angeles. This past summer, he opened Gordon Ramsay Steak inside Paris Las Vegas—where the average check is close to $100 (full menu here). This Las Vegas restaurant appears to be the destination for the Parkers’ Cumberland sausage.

Vicky was a little nervous when Ramsay’s representatives called; her reaction was: “I hope he likes it—you’ll know about it if he doesn’t like it.”

When it comes to his experience with the English Pork Pie Company, 1176 South Park Ave., Buffalo, so far, however, he seemed awfully pleased.

“We heard good news this morning,” Vicky Parker continued. “[The intermediary said] he loved them and wants us to ship more ASAP.”

For a little background, Cumberland sausage, which runs for $8.95 per pound, is a very popular sausage in England. “It’s a little more herb-y,” Vicky explained.

Although the English Pork Pie Company may not make many waves locally—it was rumored not long ago that a move to Ohio was considered—its delivery business thrives, distributing British delights throughout Europe and all the way to Asia, Damian Parker noted.

“We’re kind of getting used to the [national exposure],” Damian Parker admitted. “We’ve sold to Nick Frost, a popular English comedian, the director of “Bones” in Fox Studios and James Cameron’s film crew that shot Titanic.”

Neither Vicky nor Damian spoke directly to Ramsay, but Vicky is excited about the possibility.

“I’d love to talk to him and try to get him to come to Buffalo,” she said excitedly.

Congratulations to the English Pork Pie Company for attracting the attention of—and pleasing—one of the world’s most prominent chefs in Gordon Ramsay, who’s also quite the critic.
