It wasn’t that Wegmans was the most romantic place for a proposal—though the food mart does have a reputation for hosting hot dates—but for Michael Rybacki and Nicole Bouyea, Wegmans was a special place that represented a stage in their blossoming relationship.
The couple met in high school and started dating, but they soon went off to college seven hours apart—Rybacki to Syracuse University and Bouyea to Northeastern University in Boston, Boston.com reports.
Bouyea ended up ended up making the seven-hour haul to Syracuse to visit her boyfriend, and the college lovebirds often went to Wegmans for cheap meals at the in-store cafe. Wegmans, a Rochester-based grocery store chain, is a local favorite for its inexpensive meals. Even Alec Baldwin loves ‘em.
“It isn’t just that we love Wegmans (which we do) but moreso that making that trip back and forth was quite a commitment,” Rybacki told Patch.com, “especially for a young couple that hadn’t been dating very long. And Wegmans is representative to me of that time in our lives when we decided to make this work no matter what. When this new Wegmans store was opening up in Northborough, I knew that’s where I wanted to ask her to marry me—right there in the food court.”
So Rybacki planned to propose at a Wegmans in Massachusetts. He and Bouyea stopped at the grocery store after dinner to pick up dessert. Family and friends hid in the store until the moment of the proposal. The newly engaged couple and family members were treated to celebratory cake and non-alcoholic champagne.
