It’s true: Buffalo’s a drinking town with a sports problem

blog by S.J. Velasquez  •

The old adage “Buffalo is a drinking town with a sports problem” is undeniably true.

Late last year, Buffalo was listed among the top 25 drunkest cities in America, based on statistics compiled by the Daily Beast. Perhaps that has something to do with the information revealed in a new Trulia study: there are 6.8 bars per 10,000 Buffalo households.

Of the top metro areas with most bars per 10,000 households, Buffalo ranks No. 7, just after not-too-far-away Syracuse.

Here’s the complete list, followed by the number of bars per 10,000 households in each metro area:

1. New Orleans, La. 8.6
2. Milwaukee, Wis., 8.5
3. Omaha, Neb./Iowa, 8.3
4. Pittsburgh, Penn., 7.9
5. Toledo, Ohio, 7.2
6. Syracuse, 7.0
7. Buffalo, 6.8
8. San Francisco, Calif., 6.0
9. Las Vegas, N.V., 6.0
10. Honolulu, Hawaii, 5.9

To determine this list, Trulia used the U.S. Census’ Country Business Patterns.

Last year, the Buffalo News also estimated that 22 percent of Western New Yorkers would be considered binge drinkers based on the CDC’s definition of binge drinking.
