JJ’s Red Hots: serving up a taste of Buffalo in Charlotte

blog by S.J. Velasquez • June 20, 2012 @ 2:32pm
It only makes sense that Buffalo’s favorite hot dog would follow so many of the city’s expats that landed in North Carolina.
JJ’s Red Hots, slated to open in early July, brings a taste of upstate New York down south with Sahlen’s hot dogs and Ted’s-inspired menu items.
“This concept is inspired by beloved hot dog joints like Ted’s in Buffalo, N.Y., where I grew up eating chargrilled hot dogs, onion rings and shakes. Ted’s and other timeless restaurants like them are rooted in classic American values,” founder Jonathan Luther said in a FastCasual.com interview. “At JJ’s we will strive every day to live up to these old-school values. What sets us apart is the overall experience that we will bring to Dilworth and Charlotte.”
On a trip home in January, Luther wrote in his blog about the stops he made in upstate New York as part of his research for JJ’s. He vistited Heid’s near Syracuse, Schallers and Nick Tahou’s in Rochester, and then toured the Sahlen’s plant in Buffalo. As he put it, “there are quite a few places in that part of the world that grill up a damn fine hot dog.”
JJ’s aims to pay homage to the hot dogs of America’s sausage cities, the ones where German immigrants once settled and produced what have become the best wieners.
Here’s your chance, Buffalo expats residing in the Charlotte area, for a chargrilled dog like the ones you might remember from your hometown. For more information on the progress of JJ’s, visit the official blog or Facebook page where updates are posted regularly.
