Local Restaurant Week, Pt. II: Colter Bay Grill

blog by Ben Tsujimoto • March 30, 2011 @ 2:55pm
I think we’re pigs. When Buffalo.com goes out to eat, it doesn’t mess around (though Ben T. uses an obscene amount of napkins). Local Restaurant Week is right up there with Dyngus Day, Third Eye Blind, and the Buffalo Sabres Party in the Plaza in our most anticipated events of Spring 2011.
Stop two of our hodge-podge Local Restaurant Week tour was Colter Bay Grill (561 Delaware Ave.), placed squarely on the corner of Allen and Delaware in downtown Buffalo. Neither S.J. or Ben had dined at the restaurant/bar before, and they were curious how the natural beauty of northwest Wyoming (the state, not the county—though the statement may still apply) could be manifested through delightful fare. (That’s what the website is trying to convey, right?) Ben T. awkwardly described it as “wilderness comfort food,” but he might be crazy.
Colter Bay faithfully backs the Yellowstone theme—the dining area lends the idea of a “dignified saloon” (probably an oxymoron)—and ample nature photos adorn the walls. The LRW special includes two beers and two entrees—any entree on the menu, mind you—for $20.11 through April 3rd. Technically, it was supposed to be $21.11, but Colter Bay decided to have the price coincide with the actual year. You may or may not receive the same treatment.

A flock of Buffalo.com-ers attended, and their selections included the Frontiersman burger (photo top), the turkey melt, the Campfire wrap, and the Wyoming chicken sandwich (photo above) . For the beer—and Colter Bay has a tremendous selection, according to renowned Buffalo Eats blogger Don Burtless—the crew went with Shock Top, Ommegang, and Ithaca’s Apricot Wheat, among others.
Why should you choose Colter Bay Grill as one of your Local Restaurant Week destinations? The food was fine, but the selection was what impressed us. Many participating restaurants limit the entrees available for LRW—not so with Colter Bay. Choose any of the outdoorsy-themed options and any beer from the extensive list, and they all apply. Get some.
