The Whole Hog: A new food truck invades Buffalo

blog by Ben Tsujimoto • May 26, 2011 @ 10:03am
Buffalo—finally—welcomes a new food truck. The Whole Hog, the brainchild of renowned chef Kathleen Haggerty, opens on Allen Street (near Sample and Hardware) from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday, May 27 and will continue with the same hours on Saturday.
The vision of Haggerty and The Whole Hog falls neatly in line with the “local” movement in Buffalo; the food truck’s motto is “local, mobile and sustainable,” and it acts out the mission statement by buying produce from Native Offerings Farm in Little Valley, NY, which works hard to keep unfriendly organisms out of your food, and pork from T-Meadow farm in Lockport, NY, which treats its animals like hairy royalty.
Although Haggerty was born in Buffalo, she most recently owned and operated The Buffalo Deli in Seattle, Washington before returning to her roots; she’s clearly intrigued by our city’s local food movement.
At this stage, the truck’s offerings are limited, but given the fact that it opens on Allen during prime weekend bar hours, I have a hunch that the MANwich barbeque pork sandwich will be the best-seller. After 3, 4 or 11 adult beverages, sinking your chops into savory, locally-grown pork in chipotle barbeque sauce sounds heavenly, does it not? There are healthy options too, however—view the full menu here.
Give it a try this weekend—and it’s added incentive to checking out the opening party of Buffalo IndieSound on Allen (Friday at Hardware’s backroom).
