Tim Hortons goes up a cup size

Bigger portions at Tim Hortons.

It’s all over the Canadian news: Tim Hortons coffee shops are beefing up the size of beverage cups, and customers will have to adjust their orders accordingly.

In some Canadian markets, Tim Hortons is straight-up deleting the 8-oz. small cup from the menu and replacing it with a 10-oz. cup—what was formerly known by Canadian customers as a medium. See where this is going? What was once a large is now considered medium, extra-large is now large, and a brand new 24-oz. extra-large cup has been introduced.

Funny enough, the changes don’t seem to have an effect on Buffalo’s Tims fans, as we’ve been drinking from the big cups for years. This handy chart shows how American and Canadian cup sizes compared—before the new sizing standards were introduced in Ontario at the end of August. One Huffington Post Canada writer hypothesizes that the Ontario “test” run of large cups is more of a primer for a large-scale Canadian rollout.

What do you think? Are Americans’ larger portion expectations to blame for super-sizing at international eateries?
