Trader Joe’s to set up shop in Amherst

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •

Specialty grocery store Trader Joe’s has announced that it will open a store in Amherst later this year, WIVB Channel 4 reports.

The international chain will set up in the Boulevard Consumer Square, 1565 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst, near Lowe’s and Target. While the plaza will certainly be a one-stop shop, the presence of Trader Joe’s will add even more bustle to an already heavily-trafficked area.

Buffalo News reporter Sandra Tan lent more specifics, including that the location would be just south of Barnes and Noble, and that end of the plaza would be wholly reconstructed by Benderson Development to accommodate the chain.

Blooming out of a chain of convenience stores called Pronto Markets in the 1960s, Trader Joe’s had expanded into Western New York by opening a Rochester location in October 2012, shortly after announcing that it would make its way closer to Buffalo. In early September, S.J. clarified through KVIS representative Melissa Foster that the coming location wouldn’t be in Kenmore—but “you could bet it would be in a major quarter.”

To get yourself ready for the arrival of Trader Joe’s, take a look at six grocery items that the retailer does well, and four items you should avoid.
