Wegmans’ love-hate relationship with Alec Baldwin

Shortly after Alec Baldwin threw a hissy fit when an airline attendant asked him to turn off his mobile device, Wegmans decided to cut ties with the openly Wegmans-loving Baldwin.
Just over a year ago, Baldwin and his mother appeared on two Wegmans holiday commercials promoting $6 meals and baked goods for the Rochester-based grocery chain. Those same commercials were aired this past holiday season, too. But when complaints from loyal shoppers began rolling in—urging the supermarket to end its chummy relationship with the cheeky Baldwin—Wegmans gave in.
Wegmans representative Jo Natale told Rochester’s Democrat and Chronicle, “We enjoyed working with Mr. Baldwin, but under the circumstances we thought it best to discontinue the ads.”
The Democrat and Chronicle published that quote on Tuesday. By Wednesday night, the Wegmans-Baldwin commercials were back on the air, apparently. I, personally, was a little confused when I sat down to watch some “Law & Order: SVU” and caught the end of the cakes-and-pies ad.
New York Magazine confirmed my suspicion, reporting that Wegmans regretted the decision to pull the Baldwin commercials, adding that many supporters of the Central New York celebrity family were upset to see the ads cut from airwaves a week early:
“Clearly, many more people support Alec, as evidenced by the hundreds and hundreds of tweets, emails, and phone calls we have received. We enjoyed working with Alec Baldwin and his mom, Carol, and would do it again.”
The Wegmans team is talking the talk, but the Baldwin commercials that were once visible (and embeddable) on the official Wegmans YouTube channel are currently set to private.
Baldwin may stir the pot, but the guy’s popular. Will his recent airline escapades affect your decision to see him when he returns to Buffalo later this month for Road Less Traveled Productions’ play “The Big Knife”?
