Wegmans, the musical

A group of high school students has written and will perform a musical centered around Wegmans.

The Rochester-based grocer opened its first store in New England last year, prompting superfans to camp out for the grand opening and—apparently—inspiring youths to want to break into song. Advanced drama students at Massachusetts’ Algonquin Regional High School will perform their musical ode to Wegmans at at 8 p.m. May 10.

The idea came about when a teacher at the school used Wegmans as a setting for improv scenes in her classroom. The students developed characters over time, and the short skit eventually developed into a full-length musical, with song lyrics written by students and sung to popular tunes.

Even Wegmans is getting behind the production by donating props and generally supporting the students’ efforts.

“We’re really excited to go see it,” Wegmans’ New England division manager Bill Congdon told the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. “We’re honored that the students want to do it.”
