Wingman completes mission
by S.J. Velasquez • December 22, 2011 @ 10:40am
At the start of 2011, Ryan Hohman went with an unusual resolution: to eat 2,011 chicken wings over the course of the year. On Tuesday, Hohman wrapped up a year’s worth of wing-eating in a New York City eatery.
The Ohio-born New Yorker’s story might be familiar, as we interviewed him this summer while he was smack in the middle of his wing journey, and then we caught up with him at the National Buffalo Wing Festival in September for a video with Don Burtless of Buffalo Eats.
Since then, Hohman—or “The Ultimate Wingman,” as he’s also known by his “wingtourage”—has beefed up his wing count, hit up a few wing events and festivals, and pulled in some pretty impressive media mentions. He’s been documenting his wing-tivities on his blog, Facebook page and via Twitter.
“I feel like the year just flew by,” said Hohman, no stranger to poultry puns. “But I’m a little happy that it’s over and I can eat wings at my own pace. Needed a wing-cation.”
He celebrated the consumption of his last wing in front of a cheering crowd of about 60 people at Lansdowne Road in Manhattan. As of Tuesday morning, he’d eaten 1997 wings and would need to choke down 14 more that day to reach his goal.
“Those were the toughest wings I had to eat all year,” he admitted. “I had trouble stomaching them, but I had to get them down, so I started throwing ‘em back.”
He ate 13 wings, and when a restaurant employee presented him with the last wing, Hohman held it high above his head “like it was a championship belt.”
And as fast as he ate his very first wing of the year, Hohman had followed through on his New Year’s resolution.

“I kept the bone and slept with it under my pillow,” Hohman said, then retracted the statement, then un-retracted it. No shame, man.
Hohman doesn’t think he’s going to shoot for 2,012 wings in the new year, but he does want to keep the wing thing going, focusing on wing tours, hosting wing events and judging wing contests. He said he’s looking forward to returning to Buffalo’s wing fest in September.
“God bless my cholesterol,” said Hohman, who will be getting his cholesterol levels checked by his doctor in the very near future. Surprisingly, his blood pressure dropped this year, and he lost 14 pounds on the wing-infused diet.
After all that wing-eating, Hohman said the best wings he’d tasted came from Lansdowne Road in Manhattan, Bonnie’s Grill in Brooklyn, and Buffalo’s own Duff’s. There’s a special place in his heart for the sour patch wing from Hucklebuckets in Amherst, too.
