The American Kennel Club released its annual list of most popular dogs in America, and the Labrador retriever reigned supreme in all major U.S. cities—except Buffalo.

Buffalonians preferred the German shepherd in 2011. This wasn’t the case in 2010 when Buffalo’s favorite dog was the Labrador, aligning with the rest of the country’s dog breed preferences.

“Proving the people of Buffalo make their own trends, the German Shepherd overtook the loveable Labrador Retriever last year to become most popular,” AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson said in a news release.

This chart from the AKC’s website compares Buffalonians’ top dog breeds in 2010 and 2011:

Across the nation, larger dogs are growing in popularity, pushing smaller breeds lower on the list. To see some of the other national trends and how they compare to local dog adoption behavior, visit the AKC’s website.
