Jeanneret reduction, Sabres fans to howl in dismay

It was inevitable, I think, but commentator Rick Jeanneret is getting old.  With age comes fewer road trips for Buffalo’s beloved broadcaster, as the Sabres announced this morning.  When you have a personality (and vocal cords) as vibrant as Jeanneret’s, it’s truly amazing that he’s entering his 40th year with the Sabres.

The most recognizable TV/radio announcer in the NHL—and I can say that without bias—will continue to work every home game, but will only call 10-15 road games (determined when the schedule is released).  He had already trimmed his road workload in 2010, vacationing during the team’s extended west coast trips.

The Sabres’ press release, however, does not indicate who will fill Jeanneret’s role on the road.  Will his son, Mark Jeanneret, be “recalled” from the Portland Pirates?  This article suggests possible replacements, with our (reluctant) favorite being Kevin Sylvester.  You know who it won’t be?  Rob Ray.
