Mom works hard for the money

blog by S.J. Velasquez • October 13, 2011 @ 10:13am
It’s hard enough juggling the non-existent immediate family life I have, I can’t even imagine having to tend to a pack of kids—or even a single child, for that matter. But for any parents or potential parents in Western New York, take comfort in knowing you’re in the best region for working while raising a family.
According to Forbes rankings released Tuesday, Buffalo skyrocketed to the top of the list of Best Cities For Working Mothers this year. Last year, Buffalo sat comfortably at no. 10, but the list experienced a major shakeup thanks to a few factors. UB happens to have a solid maternity/paternity leave option for new parents who give birth to, father or adopt a child. Also, our little western corner of the state has a lower unemployment rate than 70 percent of New York. On top of all that, Buffalo has a growing female entrepreneurship scene (props to Canisius College for the Women’s Business Center at Canisius College shout-out!).
When it comes down to it, Forbes was looking at cities with job opportunities, high earning potential and the factors mentioned above. Researchers also factored in U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, crime and safety, cost of living and cost of childcare.
Here’s the list of the 10 Best Cities for Working Mothers, according to Forbes:
1. Buffalo-Niagara Falls, NY
2. Columbus, OH
3. Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford, CT
4. Pittsburgh, PA
5. Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC
6. Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis, WI
7. Richmond, VA
8. Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, MA-NH
9. Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV
10. Cleveland-Elyria-Mentor, OH
