Buffalo.com:
    •Digital Marketing Assistant (two positions available)


Interns hired through this program will gain experience in a broad range of subject areas, including, but not limited to:
    •Internal and external marketing
    •Grassroots and viral marketing
    •Promotions and contests
    •Public affairs and community relations
    • Event planning
    •Social networking
    • Digital media production


In addition, interns will be exposed to the largest media company in Western New York. The TBN Media umbrella encompasses a number of diverse businesses, including:

TBN Interactive
The Buffalo News online network includes the region’s #1 website, BuffaloNews.com / Buffalo.com, plus a   number of category-specific microsites. Digital marketing specialists in the Interactive Group create custom web strategies for advertisers, including banner advertising, rich media, email marketing, social networking, print-to-video capabilities, and daily deals.


TBN Marketing
The marketing division works with advertisers to create custom promotions that drive traffic and sales to their business.Promotions often center on contests or coupons, and utilize print and online advertising, collateral materials, direct mail, email campaigns, and events. In addition, the marketing division works to promote The Buffalo News and its TBN divisions through print, online, outdoor, and electronic advertising. Community relations and sponsorships are coordinated by this division, as well as major Buffalo News charitable initiatives.


TBN Direct
The direct mail and commercial printing division designs, prints, personalizes, and mails advertisers’ direct marketing campaigns.


TBN Distribution
TBN Distributions puts our publications into the hands of consumers, supplying more than 415 locations throughout Western New York.


TBN Publications
Specialty publications target specific audiences to deliver the most effective and relevant advertising messages.  Publications include Buffalo Magazine, Discover WNY, Best Restaurants, Health, Buffalo Brides Magazine, and Bridal Planner.

MARKETING INTERNSHIP


Position Title:           Project Assistant - Kids Day (two positions available)


Project Description and Student Involvement
This internship will provide a semester-long experiential program for outstanding undergraduate business students or graduate-level MBA students concentrating in the field of marketing.


The participants will have the opportunity to gain meaningful experience in the planning and execution of Kids Day, a major community fundraising initiative of The Buffalo News.


Kids Day is on Tuesday, April 26th this year, and on that day thousands of volunteers will help sell a special Kids Day edition of The Buffalo News. The proceeds from the sale of this special edition are presented to Variety, the Children’s Charity, to benefit Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, the Robert Warner MD Center for Children with Special Needs and Children’s Charities of Western New York. Since 1983, Kids Day contributions have totaled more than $3.7 million – helping children all across Western New York. Thousands of partners join The Buffalo News in this huge county-wide initiative, including hundreds of corner captains, thousands of volunteers and more than 100,000 donors that help to make this special fundraising campaign such a success.


Interns will assist with all Kids Day-related activities, including:
    • Planning Kids Day operations
    • Executing all Kids Day-related marketing and promotional ads
    • Coordinating Kids Day materials distribution
    • Communicating with volunteers and participating business
    • Monitoring and reporting fundraising results


Desired skills
Students who wish to participate in the internship program should have an academic concentration in marketing or a related field. In addition, students should be:
    • Highly organized and attentive to detail
    • Self-motivated
    • Able to work independently after receiving direction
    • Comfortable working directly with the public
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
    • Flexible in terms of scheduling


Learning Objectives
Students who participate in the internship will leave The Buffalo News / Buffalo.com with the following skills and experiences:
    • Intensive event planning experience
    • Understanding of day-to-day marketing department operations
    • Educational and networking opportunities with local experts in the not-for-profit realm, marketing, public
      relations, and event planning
    • Understanding of corporate media company culture / structure
    • Understanding of the transitions occurring in the local and national media field

Parameters
1.)    Pay: this will be an unpaid internship. Participating students must earn course credit   through an approved partner college or university.

2.)    Hours: Interns will work between 15-24 hours per week, depending on need. Students should be aware that work required may not be limited to regular business hours.

3.)    Equipment: Interns should have, minimally, regular access to a desktop computer with a unique account and Office suite; around-the-clock building / parking access; folder space on a shared network drive; a @buffnews.com email account; administrative access to appropriate social media accounts; access to Buffalo.com multimedia equipment and promotional items; desk space, office supplies (pens, notebooks, folders) and telephone access; and credentials to public events as needed.

 


MARKETING INTERNSHIP


Position Title: 
      Promotions Intern


Project Description and Student Involvement
This internship will provide a semester-long experiential program for outstanding undergraduate business students or graduate-level MBA students concentrating in the field of marketing.


The participants will have the opportunity to gain meaningful experience in the creation and execution of promotions designed to:
    a) provide exposure for and drive traffic to Buffalo News print or online advertisers
    b) promote our community partners or major charitable initiatives
    or
    c) promote The Buffalo News or one of our various business divisions to attract readers and / or advertisers


Interns will assist with marketing and promotional activities, including:
    • Creating new promotions based on advertiser needs and recognized opportunities
    • Working with advertising sales reps to sell promotions to clients
    • Executing these promotions by formulating a marketing plan, working with copywriters and graphic  
      designers to create and ads or collateral materials, and scheduling campaigns
    • Monitoring and reporting campaign results


Interns will work closely with Buffalo.com, which may include any or all of the following:
    • Planning a digital media seminar that will include local and national guest panelists. The planning of the
    seminar will include topic selection, invitations to panelists, promotion of the event in the local community,
    guest registration, and day-of-event detail execution.
    • Assisting with monitoring, maintaining, and measuring the social media presence of Buffalo.com and its
    affiliated brands on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Tumblr
    • Serving on the Buffalo.com street team, which will include attending local events to take photos, distribute
    promotional material, and encourage registration at Buffalo.com or its associated mini-sites
    • Assisting in content creation for use at Buffalo.com and its mini-sites, which will include blogging, event
    photography, video and video editing, and pod-casting.

    • Familiar with basic marketing concepts and terminology

Position Title:          Buffalo News Store Intern


Project Description and Student Involvement
This internship will provide a semester-long experiential program for outstanding undergraduate business students or graduate-level MBA students concentrating in the field of marketing.


The participants will have the opportunity to gain meaningful experience in operating and promoting the Buffalo
News Store. The Buffalo News Store is an online retail outlet that sells reproductions of photographs and historic artifacts to the public.


Interns will assist with marketing and promotional activities, including:
    • Creating marketing and promotions campaigns to drive traffic to BuffaloNewsStore.com and increase sales
    • Executing these campaigns by formulating a marketing plan, working with copywriters and graphic
    designers to create and ads or collateral materials, and scheduling the campaign
    • Exploring the possibility of acquiring new partners, including local and national retailers and artists
    • Working with existing partners to add new, highly marketable items to their offerings
    • Monitoring sales and reporting results


Interns will work closely with Buffalo.com, which may include any or all of the following:
    • Exploring ways to utilize social media or email marketing to increase awareness of the Buffalo News Store and drive sales
    • Assisting with monitoring, maintaining, and measuring the social media presence of Buffalo.com and its affiliated brands on Facebook, Twitter,
    YouTube, and Tumblr
    • Serving on the Buffalo.com street team, which will include attending local events to take photos, distribute promotional material, and encourage
    registration at Buffalo.com or its associated mini-sites
    • Assisting in content creation for use at Buffalo.com and its mini-sites, which will include blogging, event photography, video and video editing, and
    pod-casting.

Position Title:          Digital Marketing Assistant (two positions available)


Project Description and Student Involvement
This internship will provide a semester-long experiential program for outstanding undergraduate-level college
students focused on the fields of marketing, public relations, and/or media production.


The participants will have opportunities to work closely with media professionals on social media, viral/grassroots marketing techniques, online content creation, and event planning and promotion.


Interns will assist Buffalo.com with marketing and promotional activities, including:
    • Assisting with monitoring, maintaining, and measuring the social media presence of Buffalo.com and its
    affiliated brands on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Tumblr
    • Membership on the Buffalo.com street team, which will include attending local events to take photos,
    distribute promotional material, and encourage registration at Buffalo.com or its associated mini-sites
    • Assisting in content creation for use at Buffalo.com and its mini-sites, which will include blogging, event
    photography, video and video editing, and pod-casting.
    • Planning a digital media seminar that will include local and national guest panelists. The planning of the
    seminar will include topic selection, invitations to panelists, promotion of the event in the local community,
    guest registration, and day-of-event detail execution.

    • Highly organized
    • Self-motivated
    • Able to work independently after receiving direction
