Buffalo’s newly appointed Roman Catholic bishop will continue to lead what would have been his former diocese in Maine.
Back in May, Bishop Richard Malone announced that he would be leaving his station as bishop of the Diocese of Portland and heading to Buffalo to take the place of Bishop Edward U. Kmiec in August. As of this morning, media outlets are reporting that Malone, 66, will continue to lead the diocese in Maine.
Malone’s double-appointment at two Roman Catholic communities “is a statement of confidence in Bishop Malone’s abilities to lead both dioceses simultaneously until a new Bishop of Portland is in place,” a Portland diocese news release stated.
According to a Buffalo News story, Malone had been at the heart of debate over his involvement in covering up sex abuse by priests. Malone has also been in the news for being fiercely opposed to gay marriage.
