Canisius College graduate Kayla Boorady showed up to Christian Ricciardi’s promotion at the New York Police Department headquarters on Monday, ready to celebrate her boyfriend’s move from police officer to detective third-grade, the New York Daily News reports.
On a day that was supposed to be about ‘him,’ the ensuing surprise made the celebration more about ‘them.’
According to the report, Ricciardi got down on one knee and proposed to Boorady—in front of his colleagues—who tearfully obliged to marry her boyfriend of 18 months.
Ricciardi’s rationale was heart-warming, as he’d told Boorady that he’d propose before the end of the year—but cleverly ruled out his promotion day.
“It just popped in my head. She won’t even know it’s coming,” Ricciardi said, recalling how he decided to pop the question in front of so many of his brothers and sisters in blue. “I thought, ‘What better day to do it than on a day that everybody thinks is about me?’”
Smooth move, Christian. Western New York college grads deserve that kind of thoughtful treatment!
Boorady, a 2005 graduate of Canisius, now serves as the co-chair of the college’s New York City Alumni Chapter.
