Lord of the Rings fans, rejoice!
From Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the first of a trilogy of films adapting the ever-popular masterpiece “The Hobbit,” by J.R.R. Tolkien.
According to the film, “The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the wild.”
We are giving away 15 pairs of movie passes to an advanced screening of the film at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at the Walden Galleria Regal Cinemas.
For your chance to win, comment on this post below stating your favorite quote from the mischievous Gollum and why. We’ll take quotes from all three “Lord of the Rings” books or movies and from the “The Hobbit.”
From the comments, we will randomly select 15 winners to receive a pair of passes to the advanced screening. Winners will be announced at 3 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 7). All comments must be submitted prior to that date and time.
PLEASE NOTE: These are advanced passes and do not guarantee a seat for the screening. Seating for this film is first come, first serve so please plan on arriving early if you attend. The theatre is overbooked to ensure a full house.
Winners must be able to pick up their passes from the Buffalo News Office (One News Plaza, Buffalo, NY 14240) at the corner of Scott St. and Washington St. in downtown Buffalo before 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 10. Good luck to all the entrants!

“So bright… so beautiful… ah, Precious.” from Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers
“My Precious!”
Hrm….taters?
We wants it, we needs it. Must have the precious. They stole it from us. Sneaky little hobbitses. Wicked, tricksy, false!
“Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.” - Gandalf
I love the part when Gollum is sitting in the water while singing “The rock and pool is nice and cool, so juicy sweet! Our only wish, to catch a fish so juicy sweeeeeet!” All the while smacking a fish on a rock. This part in the movie I feel as though he’s still an innocent little creature.. However, soon enough we find out he obviously is not!
“My Precious”
It doesn’t get any better than that!
“They stole it from us!!! Sneaky little hobbitses”
“Taters? What’s taters, precious?”
Gollum looks like a lost puppy in this scene and show unexpected vulnerability and complexity with this scene. It’s small, but it does a lot for how we sympathize for this creature. Plus it sets up Sam’s awesome reply: “Po-tate-Oes!”
“That doesn’t make sense to me. But, then again, you are very small.”
- Treebeard
Short cuts make for long delays (from the hobbit)
So true, better done right and thorough than cutting corners
Aaaand I don’t read instructions well. Let’s go with this one:
“Baggines? What is Bagginses?”
We be nice to them, if they be nice to us.
“What’s taters, precious? What’s taters, eh?” Love this because I am a big tater tot fan and this is the only thing I appreciated on the high school lunch menu. Tastes great with hot sauce!
“But what is it they’ve got, precious? Is it crunchable? Is it tasty?”
The use of the word crunchable makes me laugh, but I love Gollum’s accusation that Frodo and Sam are trying to choke him.
“Ach! No! “he spluttered. “You try to choke poor Sméagol. Dust and ashes, he can’t eat that. He must starve. But Sméagol doesn’t mind. Nice hobbits! Sméagol has promised. He will starve. He can’t eat hobbits’ food. He will starve. Poor thin Sméagol!”
You don’t have any friends; nobody likes you!
It is both arrestingly funny and painful to hear Gollum’s evil half tell him that he is not loveable. As unloveable as he is, you can’t help but feel for such a ruined life while laughing at the obvious revulsion he knows he embodies.
“So bright… so beautiful… ah, Precious.”
From “The Hobbit”
Bilbo: What do I have in my pocket?
Gollum: String…or nothing
