Their photographer is… a car?

Google’s Street View is a useful little feature. How many of us would get hopelessly lost without a visual of the area, no matter how good the directions were? But the pictures don’t just magically appear, and it’s time for Google to refresh those images.

According to WGRZ-TV, , the Google Street View Car has been spotted in Western New York. This strange little car drives around with a big camera sticking up from its roof, snapping pictures 360 degrees around itself. The whole operation is run from a small computer installed in the back of the car, a big change from the racks of computers stuck in the back of the old Street View SUVs.

The camera alone makes the car stand out, but it’s even more noticeable due to its paint job - a reproduction of the basic Google Maps images you can see online.

The Street View Car stopped into Durfy Auto Shop in Gasport, Manager Timothy Durfy told WGRZ, for alignment and new tires - it couldn’t handle all of our famous Western New York potholes.

Keep an eye out for this car. Nobody seems to know its intended route, and despite its camera and paint job, it’s as elusive as a ninja.

Google’s Street View vehicles aren’t limited to cars - they’ve got a tricycle, a snowmobile and even a trolley, so you can check out biking trails, parks, university campuses, Whistler Blackcomb ski resort, sports stadiums and even museums.

You can check out Google Maps Street View online.
