Oh, Canada!

The times, they are a-changin’.
According to CNN,
“Ontario’s top court has legalized brothels, saying Canadian prostitution laws unfairly discriminate against prostitutes and their ability to work in safe environments.”
The judge ruled that the safest way for a prostitute to sell sex is to work indoors, in a location under her own control. Valerie Scott, a former prostitute from the area was quoted as saying, “It is so nice to see that we are now brought out into society. I feel a debutante at a ball. We’re almost full citizens, so this is wonderful.”
But things aren’t going to get crazy any time soon. The judge also ruled that changes to the current laws will not take effect for at least one year in order for the government to adjust it’s criminal code. The Canadian government is currently weighing its legal options, since Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been quoted as saying that prostitution is bad for society.
Other notes on the new ruling will still make it illegal for prostitutes to work from the streets looking for business. In terms of safety, it would now be legal for a prostitute to call the police on a bad client. Let’s just hope the border doesn’t get too backed up next year.
Take a look at this video coverage from CNN.

Terrible lead. What does Bob Dylan have to do with this?
Bob Dylan hopefully has nothing to do with this Jon, but it does sum up the point that this kind of legislation is a big change for Ontario. Thanks for your comment!
