An orphaned polar bear cub from Alaska will be staying at the Buffalo Zoo with fellow Buffalo-born cub Luna.

The little cub was found by Alaskan hunter James Tazruk, who on March 12 shot the cub’s mother before realizing it was a nursing sow, according to the Anchorage Daily News. Tazruk, knowing that a bear cub would be somewhere in the vicinity, discovered the 18-pound cub in a nearby den.

The cub was named Kali, pronounced “Cully,” an Inupiat name for Point Lay.

Kali, a male, will be temporarily housed at the Buffalo Zoo to interact with Luna, a female cub. Kali is scheduled to arrive in Buffalo later this spring, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced.
