No ticket to London: Carpenter misses shot at Olympics

It’s not happening for Meili Carpenter in 2012.
The former University at Buffalo diving standout and current Canisius diving coach Meili Carpenter finished eighth in the United States Olympic Team senior women three-meter diving trials on Saturday in Federal Way, Wash. Carpenter—representing Buffalo’s Wings Diving Club—had to finish among the top two to qualify for a trip to London with the U.S. Olympic squad, but her combined, two-day score of 852 fell short of five-time NCAA All-American Cassidy Krug (1094.85, pictured above) and veteran Olympic diver Christina Loukas (1017.85).
Carpenter, the 2011-12 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s and women’s diving coach of the year, entered Saturday’s competition in sixth place overall. Other notables who missed the cut included 2011 NCAA three-meter national champion Abby Johnston, six-time NCAA All-American Bianca Alvarez and 2010 Junior World Championship one-meter and three-meter winner Kassidy Cook.
Carpenter is one of the top athletes in recent Western New York history. According to BuffaloBulls.com, the Boulder, Colo. native “... completed her UB career posting school records for the one-and three-meter diving events in 2010. She swept both events at the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships earning first-team All-MAC honors and winning the league’s Diver of the Year award. She also earned honorable mention All-American honors at the NCAA National Championships. A four-time All-MAC honoree, Carpenter was also named to the Academic All-MAC and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team for two years.”
