NY same-sex marriage: first anniversary

blog by S.J. Velasquez  •

On July 24, 2011, Buffalo’s Kitty Lambert married Cheryle Rudd in Niagara Falls, making them the first same-sex couple to legally marry in New York state. The following day, 48 same-sex couples married in a group ceremony in Niagara Falls State Park.

Exactly one year after the park’s first and largest group marriage ceremony, Niagara Falls invites those couples back to the falls to celebrate their first anniversary. At 6 p.m. today, the couples are invited to renew marriage vows at Prospect Point in Niagara Falls State Park. Hard Rock Café Niagara Falls USA will host a VIP reception following the vow renewals.

“Niagara Falls has long been the Honeymoon Capital of the world and the passage of last year’s resolution allowing for same sex marriages to take place in New York, put us on the map as a marriage destination for all people,” said John Percy, president and CEO of Niagara Tourism & Convention Corporation. “Just one year later, the promotional and marketing initiatives have proved successful.”

The anniversary event was organized by Rainbow Bells, in conjunction with Niagara Tourism and Convention Corporation, and Hard Rock Café Niagara Falls USA.
