Ontario oil change specialist tweets about drug deal, loses job

If you’re looking to orchestrate a drug deal, Twitter is probably not the best platform to do so. After all, unless your account is private, any internet user can read what you’re posting.
Apparently “think before you tweet” wasn’t on the agenda for York, Ontario native Sunith Baheerathan, who, according to Buzzfeed, sent the following tweet out from his now-closed personal account, @Sunith_DB8R.
Unfortunately for Baheerathan, the York Regional Police (@YRP) department just happened to be monitoring Twitter at the time—and was able to deduce his intentions despite lingo like “20sac” and “spliff.” I guess use of the word “dealer” didn’t help Baheerathan’s cause, though.
If you’re confused about what a “spliff” entails, here’s a sound definition via a Guardian article on Snoop Lion (you just can’t make this stuff up.)
Here’s the Twitter reply by the York police, and then a comment from Baheerathan’s employer, oil change specialists Mr. Lube—who acted quickly in terminating Baheerathan as an employee on the same day. I mean, what are the alternatives when an employee inquires about marijuana to help him through a shift?
@YRP Thank you to the York Regional Police for your help and great work. The matter has now been handled.— Mr. Lube (@mrlube) August 14, 2013
Sensing that he’d made a mistake, Baheerathan sent three more tweets backtracking from his original request for marijuana—you can see them at BuzzFeed’s initial post—but his feeble attempts weren’t enough to save his job or prevent an embarrassing viral story.
Obviously, there are lessons to be learned in life—like “don’t try to acquire drugs over a public forum”—but Baheerathan dealt with the repercussions of thoughtless social media usage. Here’s to you, social-savvy YRP.
