New things are happening in Buffalo and you don’t want to miss out.

Richardson Olmsted Complex invites you to celebrate the grand opening of the South Lawn from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Featured activities include a letterboxing scavenger hunt, crafts and face painting, lawn games and the creation of a Richardson Towers mosaic with Faces of Buffalo among other things. Live music can also be enjoyed during the day with an array of bands, musicians and choirs scheduled to perform.

Local food trucks will be on hand serving tasty treats and free outside tours will also be available to attendees to “highlight the past, present, and future of this iconic complex, with a special focus on the grounds.”

According to event organizers, “rehabilitation of the landscape has started with the South Lawn between the historic buildings and Forest Avenue as a welcoming public space for gathering and recreation. The nine acre South Lawn reinvents the landscape, and its circulation as both contemporary, and Olmstedian.”

The South Lawn‘s design from Andropogon Associates looks to answer the question, “What would Olmsted do now?”

Some interesting numbers from event organizers about the soon-to-be-opened space:
*125 new trees have been planted to create a series of open, canopied spaces for gathering and recreation with stunning views of the Richardson buildings.
*Over 5,000 square feet of rain gardens have the dual purpose of serving as attractive planted areas that will address stormwater drainage and improve water quality.
*A 1300 linear foot Pedestrian loop and an improved roadway evoke Olmsted’s attention to detail and materials.
*112 parking spaces were relocated to serve the Buffalo Psychiatric Center and make way for the new landscape.
