As a proud graduate of the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart (Class of ‘07), I was pleasantly surprised to see a former classmate of mine on on the Today Show this morning.

Caitlin Dewey, the associate editor at Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine was brought in for a segment on the “Top 10 college majors for having a lucrative career.” I had a chance to chat with her on the way back from New York about how the interview came about.

“I work for a finance magazine and we have a publicist who tries to get us on different media outlets. I’ve done a bunch of local interviews in D.C., but this was my first national one,” Dewey said.

She credits our former English teacher from the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart, Mrs. Nancy Brady and participation in mock trial for the live television preparation.

In person, Matt Lauer was pleasant and great to work with, Dewey said. “He came in and sat down before the interview and we talked for about five minutes. He was amazingly down-to-earth for a guy who makes millions every year. He was very nice, joked about his kids and even autographed a script to give to my mom.”

Dewey writes about a range of topics at her position at Kiplinger’s, mostly data reporting and analyzing. She does a lot of “best cities” lists, as well as covers jobs, where the jobs are and unemployment.

“I already had written the story for our website. The Today Show saw it and got in touch with us about turning it into a television segment.”

Here are a couple photos of Dewey from when she was in New York at NBC.
