Stop the thieves!

blog by Ben Tsujimoto • July 06, 2011 @ 5:02pm
Robbing from a non-profit organization is straight-up evil. Green Options Buffalo’s Community Bicycle Workshop, an organization that instructs the local bike-riders on how to fix and maintain their bicycles, was robbed of $900 in bikes and $700 in tools on Saturday night. Open three days per week, the Community Bicycle Workshop has recycled over 1,000 used bikes since 2004, but a not-for-profit can’t absorb $1600 in losses very easily. Take a second to think how vile those thieves are.
Fortunately, though, The Good Neighborhood’s Seamus Gallivan passed along a few events that benefit Green Options Buffalo and the suffering bike shop. The free Wheel-to-Reel Film Series, featuring movies that highlight bicycles, runs each Wednesday in July in Merge’s parking lot (Delaware and Edward). Here’s the schedule:
— Quicksilver on July 13, 7-11 p.m.
— Napoleon Dynamite on July 20, 7-11 p.m. (Pedro rode a “Sledgehammer,” right?)
— Wizard of Oz on July 27, 7-11 p.m.
You’re wondering how a free event can help raise money for GO-Buffalo? Popcorn and Flying Bison Rusty Chain beer will be available for purchase, and frankly, they’re movie-watching essentials. And, you can always donate money to the cause. Help the Community Bicycle Workshop—known informally as “blue bikes”—get back on its…wheels! That wasn’t funny, but really, we wish them the best as they offset the losses.

Our city seems to be filling up with high school dropouts, petty thieves, muggers, and gangs of both genders.

Since I no longer live anywhere near the streets I grew up on, and would not walk down one in broad daylight, I haven’t a clue what all went wrong in the past few decades.
