Buffalo is among the top destinations for college-bound students, a recent study shows.

The American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) based its findings on three criteria: academic environment, quality of life and professional opportunity. From this, the 75 top college destinations for 2012-2013 were broken up according to area size.

Buffalo came in fourth place among mid-size metropolitan areas, results show. The only other cities to outrank the Queen City were San Jose, Calif; Austin, Texas; and Oklahoma City. Western New York neighboring city of Rochester came in No. 7 on the list.

Here’s the list of top 20 mid-size metro areas, defined by AIER as region with 1 to 2.5 million residents:
