Young Money: Caitlin introduces YNPN’s Ryan Daley - INTERVIEW
blog by Caitlin Campbell McNulty • September 10, 2013 @ 11:06am
In the last Young Money blog, I gave a rundown of some of the organizations in Western New York that are here for young professionals to get involved in – whether for networking, leadership development or industry connectivity.
Working for a non-profit myself, when I heard about the region’s newest group for young professionals, the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network, I was more than a little intrigued.
This week, I had the opportunity to connect with Ryan Daley, who is part of the YNPN Greater Bflo leadership team to learn a little bit more about the organization and who would be a good fit to get involved.
Caitlin McNulty: What is YNPN?
Ryan Daley: YNPN - the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network - is a national movement activating emerging leaders to advance a diverse and powerful social sector. YNPN National provides support and resources for local YNPN chapters through chapter leadership development, networking and advocacy on behalf of our members across the sector.
Caitlin: YNPN is a national organization right? Tell me more about the local chapter.
Ryan: Yes, YNPN Greater Bflo is proudly one of 36 chapters throughout the United States.
The Buffalo Metro Area is home to countless locally and nationally-recognized nonprofit organizations that play a critical role in shaping the community. Young professionals, both working and volunteering in the community, are eager for opportunities to connect with one another, develop their skills, and learn more about what it takes to successfully lead initiatives and nonprofit organizations into the future.
Recognizing this interest, a group of passionate individuals came together in the fall of 2012 to form a local YNPN chapter.
The purpose of Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of Greater Bflo (Buffalo) is to engage and support current and future nonprofit and community leaders through professional and personal development, themed networking, and social opportunities specifically designed for nonprofit professionals.
Caitlin: Who would be a good fit for your group?
Ryan: Our mission is intentionally inclusive - our events are designed with the core twenties and thirties YNPN demographic in mind, but they are not by any means exclusive. Every person of any age or experience currently working, volunteering or interested in any way in the nonprofit sector is welcome and encouraged to reach out and get to know the YNPN network!
Caitlin: How many members do you have? Do you hope to have?
Ryan: Presently, we have approximately 100 members already interested in joining our efforts prior to launch! After our official launch, we expect many more young nonprofit professionals to join our local network as the word spreads about our chapter’s innovative offerings. Our leadership team is hopeful for steady growth over our launch year - the sky is the limit!
Caitlin: Tell me about your kickoff event. What can attendees expect?
Ryan: Our chapter launch event is planned for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 24 at the Hotel Lafayette, 391 Washington St., Buffalo.
The YNPN Greater Bflo Leadership Team will unveil details on the upcoming 2013-2014 launch year that includes a Lunch & Learn series (hosted by The United Way of Buffalo & Erie County), themed networking events, and chapter service projects.
Other event highlights include free LinkedIn professional head-shots, appetizers and cash bar and our Keynote Speaker: Trish Tchume - YNPN National Director!
The event is free to attend and those who would like to attend can RSVP by signing up here.
Caitlin: What’s the difference between YNPN and other groups for your professionals?
Ryan: At YNPN Greater Bflo, we specifically target and provide programming to nonprofit professionals or those interested in joining the nonprofit sector in some capacity (i.e. volunteer, board member, career opportunities). All are welcome to attend our events as we work together to build capacity in the nonprofit sector in Greater Buffalo!
Caitlin: Why would someone want to join YNPN?
Ryan: From information sharing on nonprofit specific topics and sector specific challenges to networking or simply to learn more about what the nonprofit sector is about - give us a try! YNPN Greater Bflo is committed to strengthening the nonprofit community by serving as an inclusive and innovative resource for networking and growth to empower young professionals.
Caitlin: How does someone join YNPN?
Ryan: It’s easy! We currently offer free membership to our local chapter and those interested can sign up on our website at http://ynpngreaterbflo.org/become-a-member/
You can find the YNPN Greater Bflo chapter online and also on Facebook and Twitter.
