Jarod Oldham with a Jordanesque move puts up 2 of his 20 in UB's 96 - 90 win over Akron.

When the fans filled UB’s Alumni Arena Wednesday night to watch a battle between two of the best teams in the MAC, no one had in mind a scenario like the offensive battle that unfolded.

Three Bulls scored 20 or more points: Joshua Freelove had 21, while Javon McCrea and Jarod Oldham both had 20 as the UB Bulls defeated the Akron Zips 96-90.

Two really good teams played very…

On solid ice? Labatt Blue Pond Hockey hits RiverWorks - INTERVIEW

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •   •

Considering the long winters that Buffalo deals with year after year, you’d think pulling off a pond hockey tournament would be a breeze.

Well, since 2011’s glorious gathering at the Erie Basin Marina—where the wind was biting, the ice rock-hard and the playing conditions immaculate—precious little has gone right for the Labatt Blue Pond Hockey Tournament.

An unseasonably warm…

Jeff Ruben is really upset about Bills' Super Bowl losses

Jeff Ruben has put to words what every Bills fan has felt for the last two decades.

In what appears to be an anesthetic-induced moment of honesty—not unlike the viral “David After Dentist” video—after having his wisdom teeth extracted, Ruben releases and emotional rant about the Buffalo Bills’ failed attempts at winning the Super Bowl.

“I just wanted them to win, mom,” Ruben…

Ohio curse remains as Bulls fall to Bobcats, 73-70 - PHOTOS

UB's Shannon Evans bulls by Ohio's Javarez Willis in UB's loss to Ohio Bobcats 73-70.

There was a pretty good crowd at Alumni Arena Saturday night as the Bobcats of Ohio University came to town and handed the UB Bulls a 73-70 disappointment.

It seems UB hasn’t been able to handle the Bobcats lately and it appeared, for most of the night, that this would be the night to change all that. However it was not to be as the Bobcats came from behind in the last minutes of…

Bandits impressive in 13-7 win over Wings - PHOTOS

13,980 residents of Banditland witnessed the home team defeat the Philadelphia Wings 13-7 on Saturday night at First Niagara Center.

This was an especially sweet victory, as the Wings had previously handed the Bandits a loss in their home opener back in December. Leading performances by Mark Steenhuis (3 goals, 2 assists), Ryan Benesch (1 goal, 5 assists) and Anthony Cosmo (45…

Immediate reactions: Bandits 13, Wings 7

The Buffalo Bandits beat the Philadelphia Wings 13-7 in front of 13,980 home fans on Saturday at First Niagara Center. The lede is simple and the story is straight: Buffalo is a much better team and the result reflects that.

I’m doing a Bad Sportswriter thing here in that I decided what I wanted to write about before I watched a second of the game I was going to cover.

Canisius frustrated Niagara's Antoine Mason all night long in Griffs' 71-65 win over Purple Eagles.

The Gallagher Center at Niagara University was packed as the Canisius Golden Griffins pulled out a victory over the plucky Niagara Purple Eagles 71-65.

Antoine Mason, the nation’s leading scorer, was held to 17 points while Billy Baron, going into the night as the nation’s fifth-leading scorer, doubled that with his 34 for the Griffs.

Griffin Chris Perez was all over Mason…

FC Buffalo lands UB’s stalwart center mid, starting keeper

Daniel Stevens, Richie Wilson, Matt Stuczynski, Mike Unwin, Andy Tiedt.

Back when former University at Buffalo men’s soccer assistant coach Jim Hesch was FC Buffalo’s manager, the UB-to-FC Buffalo pipeline was at its peak. These former Bulls set the foundation for a natural connection between Western New York’s biggest university and the city’s highest-level soccer club.

Immediate reactions: Iona 101, Canisius 91

Every basketball game against the Iona Gaels inevitably becomes a track meet, as Tim Cluess’ club dares foes to keep pace score for score.

Canisius competed in style—converting in transition, throwing down violent alley-oops and protecting the basketball—for 35 of the 40 minutes on Sunday afternoon.

Unfortunately, a cold-shooting close to the game doomed the Griffs, who fell…
