The team may be in the off-season, but the Buffalo Sabres still need your help to get Tyler Ennis into the final round of TSN’s Play of the Year 2012.

Ennis dominated the first round of the bracket, beating out the Boston Bruins’ Shawn Thornton with 77.89% of the votes. The next round versus the Bruins’ Benoit Pouliot was a lot closer, but Ennis pulled out the victory with 51.21%…

Buffalo Marathon start - VIDEO

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •   •

With temperatures hovering around 60 degrees and the sun hiding temporarily behind the clouds, the Buffalo Marathon runners took off down Pearl Street for the start of either 13.1 (half marathon) or 26.2 miles (full marathon). The competitors look either jovial or focused in the above clip by YouTube user MultiSardes, and I think we caught a glimpse of Buffalo.com’s Ben K. and…

Handicapping the Celebrity Home Run Derby

Who's going yard

Prior to the start of the extended Memorial Day weekend, the Buffalo Bisons made two interesting announcements—the first being that less than 7,000 tickets remain for the Triple-A All-Star Game at Coca-Cola Field on Wednesday, July 11. Get those tickets today! The 2011 game, held in Salt Lake City, included appearances by impact Major Leaguers like Yonder Alonso (San Diego Padres),…

Blitzers rally twice to draw AFC Cleveland

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •   •

The Blitzers’ feet were dragging, AFC Cleveland was finding acres of space all over the field, and top FC Buffalo defender Jake Rinow had just left the match with a potentially serious hamstring injury. When Cleveland’s Tyler Johnston nodded home a Carlo Manna (Notre Dame College) cross at the back post in the 83rd minute to break a 1-1 draw, it looked unlikely that FC Buffalo…

Buffalo Marathon, half-marathon - PHOTOS

blog by S.J. Velasquez  •   •

Buffalo.com’s Ben K. and I ran the half-marathon Sunday morning, and so did thousands of others.

Our talented, enthusiastic photographer Don Nieman was on site to catch all the action at the start of the race and the finish line. Unfortunately, we’re experiencing some issues with our gallery uploader, so we won’t be able to post all the photos here for another day or two.

Canisius men’s baseball blows chance for MAAC Championship, tries again today

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •   •

The Canisius Griffins men’s baseball team was in the driver’s seat in Saturday’s MAAC Championship, leading 4-1 in the eighth inning over Manhattan before a late meltdown forced a do-or-die scenario today. Manhattan won 5-4 in 10 innings on a walk-off single by Brendan Slattery.

The Griffs earn another chance against the Jaspers today at noon in Troy, NY, as the double-elimination…

Sinking Cleveland: Blitzers look to avenge defeat

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •   •

FC Buffalo cannot afford to settle for a draw or loss in Sunday’s match against AFC Cleveland. Even though it’s early in the NPSL season, conceding further ground in the standings to capable sides is a death wish. With the Blitzers missing five starters from their home opener a week prior, Dan Krzyzanowicz’s team dropped a 4-2 decision at Byers Field.

“The team we fielded in…

ESPN names former Flash star Marta in list of best female athletes

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •   •

You really only need to watch these six seconds of Marta in action to understand what a special athlete she is. The impeccable first touch on the turn, the speed around the spinning defender, the patience in front of goal and the cheeky finish—it’s all there in one shining World Cup moment.

The Brazilian international superstar, who won the FIFA Women’s Player of the Year five…

Running fail - VIDEOS

video by S.J. Velasquez  •   •

Ben K. and I will both be representing Buffalo.com at the Buffalo Marathon this Sunday -- we'll be running the half -- and I'm just hoping not to make a compete fool of myself.

I've done a half before. Let me tell you: 13.1 miles by foot can be rough. I'm glad I made it alive, but I fear that I'll end up face-planting or losing control of my body halfway through the race, much…

Gettin’ Clowney: He’s HIV negative!

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •   •

Screenshot of David Clowney's twitter photo

The line between personal and private—and straight-up weird—is becoming increasingly blurry in the social media age. Some just don’t think twice before they tweet.

Buffalo Bills wide receiver David Clowney (@DavidClowney) tweeted out his HIV test results on Tuesday, confirming that he’s negative. This is wonderful news, David—thank you for the heads up!

There’s nothing wrong with…
