A pair of WNY boys called up to assist the Sabres
blog by Kathryn Przybyla • December 20, 2011 @ 12:20pm •
With 272 games for the Sabres’ minor-league teams under his belt, Rochester native Derek Whitmore finally got the call up from the Sabres to fill in for the injury-plagued roster. Joining him tonight against the Ottawa Senators, will be Buffalo native Marcus Foligno, most noted for his 2011 World Junior Championship run for Team Canada last year.
Whitmore, a 27 year-old left…

The University at Buffalo’s men’s basketball match-up tonight against BYU brings back Jimmer nostalgia. One year ago, when the #16-ranked Cougars stormed into Alumni Arena and escaped with a 90-82 victory, Jimmer Fredette scored 28 of his 34 points in the second half, prompting Reggie Witherspoon to refer positively to the BYU guard as “a bad dude.” We love it when Witherspoon uses…
Watch the newest Buffalo Bill jump out of a pool

The buzz around Jarron Gilbert before the 2009 NFL Draft was less about his draft stock and more about his rather intense strength. In the YouTube video above, the 6’5 defensive lineman—recently signed by the Buffalo Bills—launches himself out of the deep end of the pool, landing gracefully on his feet. Don’t think this is a big deal? Try it next time you’re swimming, and let us…
No more music, boys—I want a win
blog by Kathryn Przybyla • December 19, 2011 @ 10:15am •
I commend these boys on their charitable and musical pursuits, but are they still practicing football? Maybe all football players were forced to take band class in middle school, but everyone seems to be a musician these days.
Back in October, Bills safety Bryan Scott shot an interview—possibly via Skype—with Player Perspective online. The site seems to be an interview haven…

Early bird runners arriving at Mississippi Street found a sunny cold December Sunday morning soon turn gray and sprout a fluffy snowfall as the 3rd annual Freezer 5K was to start. Heart Rate Up.com coordinated the event hosted by WJ Morrissey's and Lagerhaus 95. The participants young and old alike in running gear and holiday costumes ran the 5K route that started on Perry near…

Light snow and brisk a winter chill greeted the Bandits and Fans as they approached the First Niagara Center for a Bandits open practice and autograph-signing event. A good sized, family style crowd watched their favorite Bandits organized in Orange, White and Black jersey-ed teams go through a typical practice session. The Bandettes even made a brief and spirited appearance. After…
An open letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell

This guy’s got a point. ESPN’s David Fleming asks—If Fred Jackson isn’t deserving of the Pro Bowl, who is? Until just a few weeks ago, Jackson was leading the league in rushing with 934 yards on 5.5 yards per carry along with a career-best 442 receiving yards for the Bills. ESPN’s David Fleming explains here:
Anyway, my point is Fred was a shoo-in to claim the accolades he had…
Tsuj’s Ten: College basketball, 12/16
blog by Ben Tsujimoto • December 16, 2011 @ 5:19pm •
They’re sitting at opposite ends of the spectrum: the University at Buffalo, 6-2 overall—all non-conference, rests comfortably during its 10-day lay-off, knowing it owns a quality win (Dayton) and no truly embarrassing losses, while Canisius, 1-7 overall, 0-2 in the MAAC, doesn’t have quite the luxury. While Canisius certainly has more questions than the Bulls, it’s worth looking…
