3 reasons to watch FC Buffalo tonight

blog by Ben Tsujimoto • June 04, 2011 @ 1:43pm
You’re peering out your window, and the cascade of rain drops and rumbles of thunder are pushing you to throw in The Princess Bride and nap away the Saturday afternoon/evening. STOP! You worked hard all week just so you could recline and watch a movie with characters named Humperdinck and Buttercup? Come on now. Here’s why you should see the FC Buffalo Blitzers take on the Pocono Snow tonight at 7 p.m. at All-High Stadium (and then vs. Erie at 3 p.m. Sunday):
— The beautiful thing about All-High Stadium, aside from its Highbury-esque architecture, is its covered seating. While Coach Krzyzanowicz has to park himself on a wet bench and Mike Unwin is forced to slide around slick turf, you can relax in your dry seat and enjoy a hotly contested match. It’s basically like watching from your living room, except you get the amusing cheers and jeers from The Situation Room nearby. That alone is worth the price of admission, which, if you were curious, is $5 at the gate.
— In FC Buffalo’s inaugural season, the Blitzers tied Pocono twice, including a scoreless draw at home where Buffalo peppered Troy Hernandez with 37 shots on goal. Hernandez is no longer on the Pocono roster, and the Snow sit win-less at 0-3. Buffalo.com’s NPSL Player of the Month (even if we’ve only seen two teams) Mike Reidy must be licking his chops.
— There are giveaways galore. FC Buffalo introduced its first major contest, which includes bundles of prizes that WNY soccer fans should crave. After entering the massive giveaway, note the smaller gems that the Blitzers will hand out: the first 250 fans on Saturday receive team schedule magnets courtesy of Richard Schieb and AXA Advisors, while Buffalo Wing Wear sent over 500 silly bands to distribute over the weekend. Silly bands are pretty addicting, especially the ones shaped like buffalo (the animal, not the city).
If you really like soccer, you can join some American Outlaws and FC Buffalo brass today at 4 p.m. over at Gecko’s Bar and Grille on Hertel to see the United States men’s national team take on defending World Cup champions Spain. We hear that Cesc Fabregas character is quite a looker. (Awkward.) Plus, Ben K. and Ben T. will be making an appearance! Hooray.
