716ers to continue Summer Pro Exposure League on Saturday

With the unceremonious demise of the Buffalo Warriors, the Buffalo 716ers are the Queen City’s last hope for a professional basketball venture.
From 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, the 716ers’ organization will again break down into six separate teams in order for players to be evaluated by professional scouts, agents and 716ers head coach Tawan Slaughter, who has yet to finalize her roster for the 2014 season.
The trio of games—combined with a 2 p.m. dunk contest and 4 p.m. three-point contest—will be held at Holy Angels Academy, 24 Shoshone St., Buffalo, and costs $5 at the door for spectators to attend. Part of the proceeds will go to the winning teams.
Here are the match-ups and times for Saturday’s slate of games:
1 p.m.: Team 1, Red (Bulls) vs. Team 2, Gray (Heat)
Bulls roster: Charles Sims, guard; Dre Spivey, guard; Angelo Kidd, forward; John Whitlock, forward; Seth Smith, guard; Mike Bass, guard; Eric Patterson, guard; Kyle Cunningham, guard; Tito Harris, guard.
Heat roster: Tyrell Lynch, forward; Elfrain Rodriguez, guard; Quinton Redfern, forward; H. Sanchez, guard; Dijon Mitchell, guard; Jahmell Cromartie, guard; Ivan Davis, guard; Darrell Robinson, guard; Tony Cain, forward.
3 p.m.: Team 3, Yellow (Lakers) vs. Team 5, No color listed (Brooklyn)
Lakers roster: Ashton Brown, guard; Javon Slaughter, guard; Matthew Tucholski, forward; Steven White, guard; Devon Phillip, forward; Amir Billups, guard; Daniel Snead, guard; Terrell Williams, guard
Brooklyn roster: Michael Kay, guard; Warren Kelly, guard; Josh Harris, guard; Anthony Green, forward; Rashad Faust, guard; Javon Johnson, guard; Terrance Dill, forward; Desmond Hall, guard
5 p.m.: Team 4, Royal (Thunder) vs. Team 6, Black (Buffalo All-Stars)
Thunder roster: Earl Jackson, guard; Jacob Russell, guard; Devante Vanderpool, forward; Jahmal Garner, guard; Dejon Scott, guard; Harry Ousterhoudt, guard; Leron Agee, forward; Travonta Gatewood, guard
Buffalo All-Stars: Allen Clemons, forward; Pierre Martin, guard; Moe Badger, guard; David Ruffin, forward; Marques Rainey, guard; Rodney Pierce, guard; Mansa Habeeb, guard (pictured, right above); DonJuan Tyson, guard
The 3 and 5 p.m. games are the most enticing, as the Lakers field a team of players that will represent Buffalo on a national scale this summer—see below—while Brooklyn boasts many former Buffalo Warriors, including high-scoring Rashad Faust and electric Javon Johnson (pictured below). I’m excited to see how those two teams stack up.
For those local basketball fans who’ve followed high school ball closely through the years, recognizable names like DonJuan Tyson (Traditional), Marques Rainey (Bennett), Rodney Pierce (Hutch-Tech, University at Buffalo) and Mansa Habeeb (McKinley, Idaho) play for the Buffalo All-Stars.
While the 716ers’ roster for the 2014 Independent Basketball Association (IBA) has yet to be finalized, Slaughter has already chosen 12 players to bring with her to the Los Angeles Summer Pro League, a summer spotlight event that invites NBA scouts and overseas talent evaluators to judge a wide pool of talent.
The Buffalo News’ Rodney McKissic pieced together a detailed account of the 716ers’ tryout for the SPL, delving a little deeper into a few of the players involved and Slaughter’s rigorous demands of her prospective 716ers.
Here’s that roster:
The Pro Exposure Summer League runs through the end of August, so these Buffalo athletes will have more than just this one opportunity to impress.
