If you have a Twitter account and even a marginal interest in the Buffalo Bills, you’ve undoubtedly stumbled across those #billsmafia tweets—unabashedly partisan comments from a loyal cadre of fans who have no interest in tearing down the team, throwing players under the bus or other, more familiar behaviors from so many so-called supporters across the region.

What began as a populist reaction to the predictably inane media coverage of wide receiver Steve Johnson’s agonizing, emotional tweet after his heartbreaking drop against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2010 (the now-legendary “God tweet”) is now a movement complete with its own line of merchandise. These guys are even in the news—a lot.

So how to you join the Bills Mafia? Well, you could get a tattoo. You can also jump into the action on Twitter if you’re not looking for that level of commitment—just be prepared to face the wrath of angry fans if you start trolling. Or, if you want to meet your fellow mafiosos face to face, you can head out to the Bills Mafia tweet-up from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the Pan-American Bar and Grill at the Hotel@Lafayette (391 Washington St., Buffalo). Highlights will include a re-viewing of last season’s victory over the New England Patriots, free food, new merch and the knowledge that 10% of all bar proceeds will support Roswell Park. Bills players and media members are also rumored to attend.

Can’t make the tweet-up but heading to The Ralph tomorrow? The party will continue at Hammer’s Lot on Jim Kelly Drive / Abbott Road. There will be a Chinese auction and, one suspects, a beer or two will be consumed. And then everyone will go watch the Bills frigging flatten the Patriots! God, I hate the Patriots.

Both events are free and open to the Bills-loving public.
