As of this morning, Matt Schreiner was about 53 miles from Yankees Stadium, he tweeted. But this journey to the Big Apple isn’t the average road trip. Schreiner is traveling by way of in-line skates.

The long trip from Buffalo to New York City is meant to raise money and awareness for cancer research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Schreiner’s dad, a cancer survivor treated at Roswell, inspired him to make the long trip.

“He went from a 10 percent chance of living, they found cancer in six organs, and he’s been in remission since spring of 2010,” Schreiner said in a WETM interview.

“It means the world to me. It’s so inspiring. I have no words to describe how much it means to me,” Michael Schreiner, Matt Schreiner’s dad, said of his son’s trip in an interview with TheTimes-Tribune.com.

Schreiner will complete the course wearing a Yankees jersey to honor Babe Ruth, who died from cancer, on Friday. The 25-year-old Grand Island native hopes to raise half a million dollars for Roswell.
