Boughton turning heads in pro ranks

There’s hope for the Buffalo area’s youth soccer community. In a sport where talent congregates in warm-weather hubs like Texas, California and Bradenton, Florida, obstacles have prevented Buffalo’s homegrown futbol talent from advancing to the professional ranks.
With a greater sense of unity and purpose in youth soccer, however, athletes are better prepared for the big stage; former Nichols star Bobby Shuttleworth is the backup goalie for the MLS’ New England Revolution, former Medaille record-setter Gary Boughton plies his trade in USL Pro while fellow Maverick Kendell McFayden is battling for time with the PDL’s Kitsap Pumas. To my knowledge, they are the only three WNY natives who currently earn money from playing soccer.
Boughton, in particular, has found his niche with FC New York after signing in mid-March. In a 3-0 win over Dayton, the all-time NCAA Division III assist leader notched his first professional marker in the 71st minute.
“Only two or three minutes after entering as a substitute, I made a diagonal run from the right wing, cutting between the two center backs,” Boughton explained. “I received a pass and beat [the keeper] to the near post.”
The Lancaster High School (‘06) standout has started in three matches and appeared in 11 games total. He’s embraced the role of second half substitute, adding pace and distribution to wear down opposing defenses for the final 20+ minutes of each match. FC New York is unbeaten in four of its last five contests heading into tonight’s friendly against Western Massachusetts.
Although Belson Stadium at St. John’s University is his current stomping grounds, Boughton didn’t hesitate to credit his Buffalo roots.
“I’m very proud of where I’ve come from,” said the 22-year-old midfielder. “It’s good to represent a proud and strong city like Buffalo.”
With local pride comes an appreciation for his college career at Medaille. “Coach [Krzyzanowicz] instilled belief and confidence in me, and that’s what got me to where I am,” Boughton added.
Expect announcements like this to be more frequent for WNY soccer players due to a more focused youth system, higher quality coaches and the local success of clubs like the WNY Flash and FC Buffalo.
Keep tabs on Boughton by visiting the FC New York page of the USL website, as FC New York’s own site isn’t frequently updated.
