Buffalo Subaru Four Mile Chase set for Friday

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •

You thought all the major summer running events were over—the Buffalo Marathon, Corporate Challenge and Susan G. Komen Run all wrapped up in late May or early June. Still, there’s another opportunity to show off your blistering summer fitness regimen to the city—and win some cash.

The Buffalo Subaru Four Mile Chase begins at 7 p.m. Friday from the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Bidwell Parkway. The route heads north up Elmwood, turns right on Forest, shuffles down Delaware, turns back west on Summer, north again on Elmwood, and east on Bidwell. It’s basically a pleasant square in north Buffalo!

Although the online registration has passed, runners can pay $25 to enter tomorrow (cash is preferred). Here’s the day’s schedule:

Registration: 11 a.m. till race time
Live music: 3 p.m. East High Band
            5 p.m. Mirage
Elite introductions: 6:40 pm
Start: 7 p.m.
Live music:7:30 p.m. Patti Parks
Awards: 8:30 p.m.

Here are some of the perks of the Subaru Four Mile Chase:

There’s a “Couples Division” with prizes ($150, $100 and $50) to the top three romantic duos. The couples are ranked by averaging their two times, so don’t worry—you’re not expected to run together.

The race record for four miles is 17:53 by Kenyan Joseph Itati. Hey, it’s something to shoot for, at least.

There are 18 different age groups to be ranked in, so you’ll be competing against similar folks in a narrow age bracket.

$10,000 is the total prize money, and here’s the prize breakdown.

The race’s website depicts the post-race party as “Western New York’s Best,” although I believe every major race has claimed the same thing. Still, the location of the end of the race drops runners within walking (or jogging) distance of several Elmwood bars. Seeing that there’s complimentary beer at the post-race party, you’d be wise to enjoy the free beer first.
