Champion Flyers provide stiff test for Bulls

blog by Ben Tsujimoto • November 30, 2011 @ 10:05am
Considering the rise of Boise State, TCU and Houston in college football and Butler, Gonzaga and San Diego State in basketball, the line has really been blurred between mid-major and high-major schools—is there really still a gap in competitiveness?
The Dayton Flyers stomped the notion that mid-majors remain underdogs in the Old Spice Classic, surging past the ACC’s Wake Forest and the Big Ten’s Minnesota en route to the title. That’s a pretty nasty achievement for an Atlantic 10 school that has won only one conference championship since its entrance in 1995.
What mid-major foe gets to face the Flyers fresh off their tournament win? None other than the Buffalo Bulls, who haven’t played since annihilating Canisius 94-59 eight days ago.
Sitting at 3-1, Reggie Witherspoon’s club has dominated at home (3-0) but struggled away from Alumni Arena (0-1), shooting 5-30 in a dismal first half—and eventual loss—against Princeton. Road woes plagued the Bulls late in conference play last year, too, as UB lost five consecutive conference road games to close the regular season.
The game begins at 7:00 p.m., and the Dayton Flyers’ website will offer live streaming video, stats and streaming audio.

Pretty impressive win. I wasn’t even sure they would compete and then they go out and make it look easy….we might have something special here?
