Choose your QB: Gettin’ weird with Alex Zordich and Joe Licata

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •

Training camp battles, especially at quarterback, are always a little awkward. Team dynamics are naturally strained when two players on the same roster compete for a prominent starting role, especially when the battle rages late into the summer.

For the University at Buffalo Bulls, redshirt freshman Joe Licata and junior Alex Zordich are in a dead-heat in the race to be head coach Jeff Quinn’s starter against the Georgia Bulldogs Sept. 1, and right now, there’s no clear leader. Last year’s starter, Chazz Anderson, a graduate transfer from Cincinnati, finished his NCAA eligibility last season.

Licata, a local product from Williamsville South High School, is a prototypical pocket passer with a strong arm and limited mobility. Zordich, on the contrary, is a burly, mobile signal-caller with a willingness to break the pocket and run. He’s limited as a passer, however, even though he’s made strides with his accuracy and arm strength over the last two seasons.

The media peppered the quarterback duo with questions on Tuesday at UB’s media day, ranging from how they both have handled the fierce competition to what they need to prove through the rest of camp. Some responses were insightful, others littered with team-first cliches.

With Quinn insistent that he won’t name his starter until at least next week—if not later—we’ll just have to be patient and browse through their answers to a couple quirky, non-UB-related questions:
