Five things I think about Chazz Anderson

blog by Ben Tsujimoto • July 05, 2011 @ 8:53pm
Today, UB announced the addition of quarterback Chazz Anderson, a fifth year senior from Cincinnati that plans to continue his education at the University at Buffalo for graduate school. With a season of football eligibility remaining and post-bachelor work on the docket, Anderson can transfer and play immediately as per NCAA rules. Here’s what I think:
1) He’s not going to save the program, but it’s a sign that Quinn’s Cincinnati connections are still paying dividends. It’s a boon to invite another competitor into a wide open quarterback race, particularly one that’s spent four years at a major D1 school learning from Tony Pike and Zach Collaros. At the very least, Anderson can pass along knowledge to wide-eyed rookies like Joe Licata and Tony Daniel, probable starters down the road.
2) Speaking of Licata and Daniel, I would not be shocked if both QBs redshirted this year. If injuries strike—and they always seem to—there’s always the option of pulling off the redshirt in the middle of the season, as was done with Alex Zordich last year. Regardless, Bulls head coach Jeff Quinn is clearly okay with having freshmen sit for a year, considering Pike and Collaros didn’t suit up in their freshman seasons at Cincinnati.
3) You can never have too many players with consecutive “z”s in their name. Look what Jacquizz Rodgers did at Oregon State—he electrified Beaver fans for three seasons, defying the odds of what a 5’6 football player should be able to do. All because he has two “z”s in a row.
4) Have fun searching for YouTube videos of “Chazz Anderson.” If you fail to type in “football,” you’ll notice that there’s a female bodybuilder with the same name, and she’s exceptional at doing hanging leg raises. Watch it, you won’t!
5) I still think Alex Zordich is the favorite for the fall QB job at UB. He’s the most talented all-around quarterback on the roster; perhaps Quinn listed Davis as the “clear starter” over the summer as fuel for Zordich to improve and compete. Anderson’s thrown 126 passes in his career, tacking on three touchdowns and four picks. He won’t start, but he’ll be a valuable reserve and useful in explaining Quinn’s offense to the freshmen and Zordich.
