Multiple media sources are reporting that former Buffalo Bills linebacker Shawne Merriman was hospitalized briefly on Sunday night in Los Angeles after what is being described as a “medical emergency.”
Details are sketchy, but here’s what is out there:
- Deadspin has posted a tweet from Los Angeles Times reporter Andrew Blankenstein—whose initial story, filed at 1:01 a.m. this morning, noted only that the former All-Pro “was taken from The Colony in the 1700 block of N. Cahuenga Boulevard to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center around 9:30 p.m.”—reporting that Merriman ‘overdosed, ingested unspecified combo of alcohol-drug.’ Blankenstein has since updated his story and has added this tweet:

- Strangely enough, however, Merriman was out and about on Sunday night / Monday morning and appeared to be fine. He was caught on camera by TMZ.com and asked about his deoderant preferences, partying with Darren McFadden and whether underperforming players should return their contract cash:
Also from TMZ.com:
Our TMZ photog noticed Merriman leaving Greystone Manor (a short cab ride from Colony) around 12:26am on Monday morning ... and struck up a normal TMZ conversation with the guy.
In the footage, Merriman appears lucid, conversational ... and in no way like a person who was “barely conscious” just 3 hours before the video was shot.
At one point in the video, Merriman asks us “So, what’s up?” Our guy responds, “Just livin’.”
Merriman quickly jokes back, “Yeah, me too.”
Merriman also tweeted a photo of himself hanging out with the hip-hop artist The Game:
...and the only mentions he made on Twitter to any possible issues during his night out were the fact that he ruined a shirt and lost his sunglasses—which could happen during a trip to an Italian restaurant, too. The truth about Sunday’s incident will undoubtedly come out soon, and hopefully Merriman just took a little too much Benadryl before having a few beers.
Merriman played parts of eight seasons in the National Football League, including his final two with Buffalo. He finished his career with 45.5 career sacks, although only six came in his final five seasons. He missed four games in 2006 after testing positive for steroids. Merriman had two sacks and 19 tackles in 15 games for the Bills. He officially retired this past March.
