‘Najja’ ordinary interception

blog by Ben Tsujimoto  •

It’s very rare that a local athlete finds a place in SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays, but University at Buffalo cornerback Najja Johnson secured that feat last night after an acrobatic interception against Bowling Green. Johnson’s interception ranked No. 2 on the highlight show’s reel.

The pick, Johnson’s second of the game off Falcons’ QB Matt Schilz, came in the third quarter with the Bulls trailing 14-0. Schilz’s toss flew over the head of his intended receiver into Johnson’s chest—the UB junior defensive back, however, let the ball slip through his fingers as he slid to the turf, but managed to awkwardly trap the ball between his legs without having the nose of the football touch the ground.

Acrobatic, if unconventional.

UB closed its season with a 21-7 loss to Bowling Green, however, the first contest after head coach Jeff Quinn signed a contract extension through the 2017 season.

The Bulls finish the season with a record of 4-8 overall, 3-5 in the Mid-American Conference. UB hasn’t qualified for the college postseason since its 2009 run to the International Bowl and closed the 2012 campaign tied for fourth in the MAC East Division with Miami (OH).
