Regatta forever: Show off your kayak skills Sunday

blog by Ben Tsujimoto • August 22, 2012 @ 9:57am
Maybe you visited a friend’s beach house this summer and got hooked on kayaks, or maybe you rented from BFLO Harbor Kayak and puttered around near the grain elevators on a glorious summer evening. Regardless of how you became interested, there’s a kayak challenge on the horizon.
From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, GameOn! Sports will host a regatta sponsored by Labatt Blue Lime off Woodlawn Beach at Woody’s Beach Club. Registration costs $25 to participate, there’s space for 100 kayaks to race and you must enter before noon Saturday. There is day-of registration, but prices increase and parking is no longer free.
While you’re expected to bring your own kayak, there are options if you do not own one. Game On! Sports recommends Buffalo River Canoe and Kayak Outfitters on Harlem or Ohio streets (two access points), which offers a $40 daily rental, and Paths, Peaks & Paddles in Tonawanda, which prices kayaks between $45 and $55 for 1-2 days. Advance reservations are encouraged for both.
For the $25 entrance fee, participants receive a t-shirt, free parking, a race number, a meal of Woody’s “Cheeseburger in Paradise, a side and a drink, and the opportunity to win prizes—either cash, trophies or Labatt Blue memorabilia. $3 Labatt Blue Limes will be available for all competitors.
Spectators can watch the race, which is broken up into three separate heats at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. before the finals at 4, for free. Nearby is Woody’s Taqueria, which has received rave reviews from local foodies and earned a tie for #10 with Lloyd Taco Trucks in WGRZ’s Top 10 Restaurants in Buffalo. You may recognize the owners, the Curtin family, which also runs Dug’s Dive, Lake Effect Diner and the Steer.
