It may not be the most comfortable of transitions for former Bills wide receiver Naaman Roosevelt, but at least it’s an opportunity to get back in the National Football League.

According to sources close to the Buffalo News’ Rodney McKissic, the former University at Buffalo and St. Joe’s Collegiate Institute star has been invited for a tryout today with the New England Patriots.

After the Bills cut Roosevelt in training camp after drafting speedy T.J. Graham, the local prodigy went unsigned for the first 15 weeks of the season and worked out at the Northtown Center next to UB, the Buffalo News added.

With Donte’ Stallworth and Julian Edelman on injured reserve, and Brandon Lloyd and Wes Welker listed as questionable on a regular basis, Bill Belichick and the Patriots are desperate for receiving depth. If Roosevelt is signed, expect him to battle with recently-added Deion Branch for the third receiver role. It would certainly feel weird to see the home-bred Buffalonian Roosevelt in the Pats’ silver, blue, red and white uniforms.

Not surprisingly, Roosevelt posted his highest total of receiving yards in the NFL—74—in match-up against the Patriots in 2010, which could have been a factor as the Patriots scoured the free agent wire for available wideouts.

At the University at Buffalo, Roosevelt still holds the program’s all-time records for receiving yards, all-purpose yards, receptions and touchdown catches. Despite his collegiate production, Roosevelt’s lack of quality competition in the MAC and rather slow 40-yard-dash times led to him being passed over in the draft.
