Rogers Cup kicks off in Toronto

blog by Kathryn Przybyla • August 04, 2012 @ 12:16pm
No need to hit up New York City for the U.S. Open this year, the world’s top male tennis players will be in Toronto for the next two weeks.
The Rogers Cup, hosted at York University has brought the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick and Novak Djokovic to grace its hard courts. Players will be in town from August 4 to 12, vying for the Championship title.
According to Tennis Canada,
Since 1881, the best men’s tennis players in the world have showcased their skills on Canadian courts. Only Wimbledon and the U.S. Open have longer histories than the major Canadian stop, which is acknowledged by the tennis world to be one of the best-run tournaments on the Tour.
Classified as a Masters 1000 event on the ATP World Tour tournament calendar, Rogers Cup presented by National Bank offers more than $3 million in prize money and attracts the biggest stars of men’s tennis year after year.
Last year, Novak Djokovic continued his incredible season by capturing his second Rogers Cup title in his first tournament since winning his maiden Wimbledon crown and ascending to the world No. 1 ranking. It was the Serbian’s ninth title of 2011, who previously won the Canadian crown in 2007.
Session tickets are now on sale, starting at $25 and can be purchased online through the Rogers Cup website.
A perfect day trip from Buffalo, I will be in Toronto this Tuesday, taking in the games and coming back with a full report. Besides a seat at Centre Court, session tickets also include a grounds pass to walk around the practice courts, meet players, get autographs and purchase tennis gear.
For more information on the Rogers Cup, check out their website with updates, draws and order of play schedules.
