$650 million is a staggering number.  It’s not, fortunately, the sum of Ralph Wilson’s personal profits from the Buffalo Bills—it’s the annual proceeds from cancer-charity running programs in the United States.  There are definitely currents of generosity in Buffalo, and one of this weekend’s events is a prime example.

Grocery retailer Tops Friendly Markets and Roswell Park Cancer Institute have combined efforts for the third straight year to raise money for the elusive cancer cure, highlighted by Sunday’s 5k/10k race in Williamsville (6363 Main Street.)  The registration fee is $25, and the race begins at 9:30 a.m—over 1,000 participants are expected, and $100,000 is this year’s charity goal.  On-site registration is fine, but it’s advised that you show up comfortably in advance (and no static stretching!).

As a Tops employee during my college summers, I remember the panic that would sweep through the store before Tops President and CEO Frank Curci would pay a visit to East Aurora.  Did the store look okay?  Were the floors glistening?  Were any emergency exits blocked?  The idea of his presence had employees scrambling feverishly.  Tangents aside, Curci praised his organization’s relationship with Roswell:

“We are incredibly lucky to have a renowned cancer research hospital that offers state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, and employs some of the most talented medical and research professionals in the world right in our back yard,” Curci said in the company’s press release.  “It is important to us that we help give back to fellow local organizations, and we will continue to support Roswell in any way we can.”

I may be writing this while noshing on a fried fish sandwich the size of my noggin, but still, outdoor exercise is especially valuable now because treadmill season is just around the corner.  I’d rather gaze at historic Williamsville and breathe fresh air than at a muted TV showing men’s powerlifting from Sweden.
